What Are Japanese Auction Grades?
Japanese car auctions use a standardized grading system to communicate vehicle condition quickly and accurately. Understanding these grades is essential for anyone looking to import Japanese vehicles.
Overall Grade Scale
Vehicles are graded on a scale, typically from S to R:
Grade S
Almost new condition. Typically under 1,000 km with no repairs needed. Very rare.
Grade 6
Excellent condition. Under 30,000 km, like-new interior and exterior. No repairs needed.
Grade 5
Very good condition. Under 50,000 km, very clean with minimal wear. May have tiny scratches.
Grade 4.5
Good condition. Clean vehicle with some minor wear. Most common grade for quality imports.
Grade 4
Average condition. Some scratches, dents, or interior wear. Still a good buy with minor touch-ups.
Grade 3.5
Below average. Noticeable wear, scratches, or dents. May need repairs.
Grade 3
Poor condition. Significant wear or damage. Usually only for parts or major restoration.
Grade R
Repaired accident damage. Must be disclosed regardless of quality of repair.
Interior Grade
Interior is graded A through D:
- A: Excellent - like new
- B: Good - minor wear, small stains
- C: Average - noticeable wear, may need cleaning
- D: Poor - significant wear, tears, or damage
Diagram Markings
Auction sheets include diagrams showing damage locations:
- A: Scratch (A1=small, A2=medium, A3=large)
- U: Dent
- W: Wavy (panel repair)
- S: Rust
- X: Needs replacement
- XX: Replaced panel
Tips for Reading Auction Grades
- Grade 4 and above are generally safe choices
- Always review the auction sheet photos
- Consider the interior grade separately
- R-grade doesn't mean poor quality - check repair quality
- Mileage is independent of grade
